Description
My Instrument HistoryIn 1964 I started building
“folk style” open back banjos which were very popular at the time.
Shortly after, I started building guitars; mostly steel string but some classical too.
More recently I have added short scale Bouzoukis, “A” style Mandolins, and Baritone Ukuleles
Originally I built banjos with all aluminum rims patterned after the Ode banjos of the day.
All aluminum rim banjos offer a very vibrant tone that sometimes rings too long to produce the best tone.
Early on I started laminating my aluminum rims with veneers of various hardwoods.
This produced a clearer, more pleasing tone that sounds much better.
This banjo, serial number 125, has a laminated rim of aluminum, overlaid with 4A quilted maple, and a walnut edge cap.
The rim features a “Raised Head” design and a “Remo FiberSkyn 3” head which closely resembles calfskin in sound and appearance.
The tailpiece is old “Waverly” style and the tension hooks are 1930s style hook and nut.
The neck is mahogany with rosewood finger board and nickel-silver frets.
The tuning machines are planetary-style with a geared 5
th
string peg.
The heel cap and back of peg head overlay is ebony veneer and the peg head is overlaid with ebony/bleached birds eye maple.
The finish is semi-glass lacquer.
Price includes a Terapin Gig Bag.
